Have just returned from a wonderful week on Oceana sailing to Iberia,on the two formal nights i noticed a mixture of how the gents dressed mostly dinner jackets but suits were very acceptable, there were alot of men on this cruise who apparently didn't want to dress up and as far as i know they ate in La Plaza buffet or Le Jardin, if you want a more layed back cruise we have friends who havejust returned from Ocean Village and dressed smartly on a evening but did not need to pack a suit, i also believe NCL to be relaxed cruising, my husband is not a suit man but on the two occasions he wore it he thoroughle enjoyed the night in The Lingurian resteraunt

We "did" our first cruise on Oceana in March 08. Due to a number of factors--we did not feel like dressing up on 2 of the formal nights. Instead we ate in the Le Jardin restaurant or indeed had room service---the food was excellent on both occasions. For some people, the rigidity and formality of dining in the same place, same time, makes their holiday. But we are not all the same--the point of a cruise holiday is to enjoy yourself---not suffer the restrictive attitudes of some people who usually, have "been there done that"---and thats all they can talk about.
We found that the most interesting people ---liked variety, and were able to give us some helpful tips about cruises in general----rather than boasting---"this is my 15th cruise etc"
Its YOUR holiday---eat where you want and when you want---cruising is so much more than eating !!

I could not agree more with Scaling of York. Why do people such as Wilber have to be so rude. A serious question was asked and it deserved a thoughtful informative response not one laced with sarcasm to the point of hostility. I am on my thid cruise with P & O this year and yes I enjoy dressing up - but not all the time. I choose the cruise because I like the itinerary.
May I suggest that passengers such as Wilber are stuck in a time warp, when only the rich could afford to cruise. Perhaps they don't like the fact that it is now acessible to ordinary people. Long may it the the case.

Patrica, There are 3 things on all these sites that fire up a lively debate, Tipping, Dress Code & the new kid on the block, Smoking. I openly admit I’m stuck in a time warp. A time when people complied with rules & had respect for their fellow man. & went with the flow & not against it. Why when boundaries are set, people want to push the boundaries is beyond some of us of a certain age. In this case the dress code of the day is clearly stated in the Daily Cruise Sheet & when people do not comply, people like me see it as an act of defiance. That doesn’t make me right of course, but I do defend the right to express my views on sites like this. As to your other comments about only when the rich could afford to cruise……I wish… & believe me, like you I’m very, very ordinary if your referring to class status. Finally, although some of my comments may seem hard, they are not personal attacks, but merely observations on the path this wonderful country is going down. Love Wilba

What a shame there are so many people out there who don't relish the opportunity to put on a bit of bling and get dressed nicely. It happens so rarely these days. Why not remain in the nude and order room service? That gets over the need to get dressed altogether. The tracksuit and football shirt generation really has a lot to answer for IMHO. As Wilba has said - the whole point of selecting a traditional cruise experience is to have a experience that lets you relive the days when people took a pride in their appearance. Rant over.

My husband and i are going on the oceana next week, please tell me you and Wilba won't be on it,i think it's people with your narrow minded views that put such as myself off, luckily i have spoken to past passengers and if the men do not want to wear dinner suits there is a very nice buffet, we like to look smart and will dress to our own taste. When we return i will give my opion to MrsPalmer so don't be put off the oceana yet.

Madam, I do not have a narrow minded view, but I do respect the wishes of my host ie: the cruise company. No one said a dinner suit is required, a lounge suit is perfectly acceptable & has I've written many times before, this attitude of I'll do what I like & stuff you lot is the very undoing of our society. Freemantle put it a little more courteously than Myself & Aldrich, 90% of people do take the trouble to comply. That's a big majority. Enjoy your cruise & no your safe, I won't be on it.
