Q: We are going for 7 days on Saturday 30th August for 1 week. I have been advised that I can't use Switch and have to pay by credit card. Can I just register Credit Card and then pay all cash or split between cash and credit. An answer would be much appreciated as this is our first time cruising

This is what it says on the P&O website "For your convenience, P&O Cruises operates a cash-free system on board with Sterling as the currency. This is an automatic process; all you have to do is register your credit card during check-in at the beginning of your cruise. No further action is then necessary. You sign for all purchases and simply settle your account by credit card or debit card at the end of your cruise. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, Visa Delta and Visa Debit. We regret we are unable to accept Switch/Maestro, Solo cards, American Express Prepaid Travellers Cheque Credit cards or Visa Electron. We are also unable to accept payment via cheque or by cash." In reality I have heard of people paying by cash even without a credit card and I am sure that you can still pay off part or all of your account in cash.

Thank you very much - I would prefer to be able to pay cash but I will register Credit Card and if I have to pay with that, that's okay. It's just we don't really use it much and therefore don't have a large amount of credit, but I think I am worrying unnecessary as I do have £1,000 on it and I can't see us spending that in 7 days although we do have three tours booked. Have you any idea of prices etc., on board ? thanks again

Why don't you simply phone up the Credit Card Company and explain that you are going on a cruise and could they increase your credit card limit. They will jump at the chance ( assuming your credit is ok ) so much so you will probably be offered a credit limit that is far too high. Tell them no - and increase it just to say 2000 or 3000. Paying by credit card is far far safer than carrying cash anyway. Plus on a Med cruise cash machines pay out in euros - no good for P&O which will be in Sterling. one further thing I have used Visa Debit cards (switch) on embarkation with P&O and Princess- just hand it over and they swipe it - no bother at all. What they say and what they do - differ.

Drinks prices are around the same as what you would pay ashore, around £2.30 pint of lager, £2.50 gin & tonic
