We spent 55 days on board this lovely ship from mid January 08 to 10th March 08. We joined in Rio as we had 'done' transatlantic and Brazil before and we wanted to spend Xmas with our family.
I was apprehensive of sailing on a smaller ship than we were used to, but I quickly appreciated the friendly ambiance that Artemis exudes.
Buenos Aires was fantastic and we appreciated the overnight stay in Port which enabled us to see more of the city. The Falklands were just as expected - windy and desolate. It was good to see though and think of all that had happened on the island. Seemed to be a lot of new 4 wheel drive vehicles which we were told were part of the compensation package offered by the government!
Antarctica was just awesome. I want to go back! We had superb commentary from the experts on board. We also had an experienced 'Ice Captain' that P & O had invited on board to guide us through the icebergs. Completely wonderful and faultless in every way.
The Chilean Fjords were beautiful too and the Captain swung the ship around so that everyone could see the glaciers and scenery without leaving their cabin or favourite space on board.
We took a city tour to Santiago from Valpariso in Chile and it was well worth the journey. Could have done with another overnight stop in port to enable us to see Valpariso also as we were told by fellow passengers that it is a lovely city.
It was my first experience of going through the Panama Canal and I thought it was spectacular. We had a good commentary from the bridge explaining the various engineering feats etc. I'd love to do this again as well!
We had stops in Costa Rica, Key West and Fort Lauderdale before heading back across the Atlantic via Madeira, for Southampton.
We broke all records crossing 'the pond' as the Captain was trying to keep ahead of a particularly bad storm. We arrived in Southampton at dusk and stayed on board overnight before disembarking at the usual time in the morning.
A fantastic cruise. Great food, fabulous ports and wonderful staff.
Well done P & O,
Ros
