DINING ARRANGEMENTS FOR DIABETICS

Bewar booking cruise with P&O if you have diabetes and you are allocated FIRST SITTING WAITING LIST. We have cruise with P&O 7 times and although allocated FIRST SITTING WAITING LIST have always been given first sitting but not on the Artemis. The Resturant Manager does not seem to care and although I went to see him twice and we ate in the Self Service as I informed him second sitting at 8.30pm was out of the question he suggested we took Afternoon Tea. After complaining to Reception and the food and beverage manager we wer given a place on first sitting. It turned out we were not the only people with problems. There were plenty of places - in fact cruise staff were on some tables. We are now very apprehensive about cruising P&O again - which is very sad as otherwise you are very well looked after.

Do you inform your travel agent on booking your cruise that you are Diabetic and how important it is to eat at regular times for medical reasons? I have had Type 1 Diabetes for 28 years and have never been wait-listed for 1st sitting, I have 4 Insulin injections per day (sometimes 5 injections if I have eaten too much tempting carbohydrate!!) I have cruised 10 times with P & O and have never had a dietry problem. The choice of food available is excellent for our needs.

We always inform travel agent P&O when booking and have never had a problem before - in fact the reverse. This was our 7th cruise with them including 2 part world cruises. We were not the only diabetics on this cruise who had the same treatment from the resturant manager. It is so sad that he did not solve this problem and we had to go to his manager who solved it within minutes. Lets hope he learns from his errors. My husband has had diabetes over 40 years and also takes 4 injections and this is the first time we have had any problems cruising with any cruise line. Other passengers who had cruise many times were astounded at the problem we encountered as there were lots of empty places on first sitting in fact crew members were taking places on some tables.

I had my first cruise on the Artemis in April 2008 I can only say that within a few moments of taking my place for dinner the restaurant head waiter was at the table asking how they could help and were very polite and so willing to please. With food being served throughout the day what was the problem? All i can say is i would always travel P&O given the option, it is just their single traveller pricing that is a problem.

If you have cruised with P&O 7 times and all you can find to complain about is not being allocated Ist sitting once, I do not really see why on earth you should only give an overall rating for the cruise of 2 stars, let alone consider giving up cruising with P&O completely? Seems a bit excessive to me! Happy cruising.

If you were unfortunate to be diabetic you would understand. As I commented we have never had this problem with ANY cruise before and were not the only people complaining. We do enjoy cruising and have used other cruise lines. Although we sailed on the Victoria which is a small ship and catered for us extremely well we now think that the larger ships Oriana and Aurora are better at catering for us - this was the concensus of quite a few passengers on our Artemis cruise who were of the same opinion .

For a diabetic the issue of regular meals is critical. I can see why it would have spoilt the experience. I assume most cruise lines are made aware of medical and dietary problems before the cruise commences. It should have been easily resolved by the crew.

Well lets just hope that they don't jump out of the fryingpan into the fire then by leaving P&O for another cruise line that might be a lot worse in many more ways, eh? Happy cruising.
