Aurora Canaries Collection - August 2008

Cruise Ship: Aurora Sailed: August, 2008
Destination: Canaries Age: 36-45
I travelled on Aurora just after she entered service some 7 years ago and found her a little quiet for my tastes. After much deliberation we chose her again for a mid summer Canaries cruise. After arriving in Southampton (QE2 terminal) we waited a short while to check in and then immediately boarded her. The ship looks almost new following her refurbishment and impressed from the word go. There were lots of families on board but we had little problem with children dominating the ship. In fact the broad cross section of people made it a very sociable cruise.

Having done a similar cruise before, the main objective was to get some summer sun and during what were to be a wet 2 weeks at home we were not disappointed. The weather was a bit windy but in general pretty dry. We had some extended port stays in view of a bow thruster which was being repaired which meant more opportunity to go ashore.

We did suffer some unseasonably rough seas on the return trip but the weather was still pleasantly sunny.

Our cabin was immaculately maintained by the steward, there was plenty of seating outside and perhaps the highlight of the cruise was a number of meals at the cafe Bordeaux which is sadly lacking on many P&O ships but it was a great place to while away an hour if the sun got too much! Sadly our restaurant waiters were a bit average and didn't interact all that much (probably why we used the Bordeaux) but other than that it was a first rate cruise.
Quality of Food4
Overall the food was good but some of the main restaurant meat dishes weren't the best. The cafe Bordeaux exceeded expectations.
Entertainment5
Good theatre company, Leon and his team were also highly visible.

Staff4
Cabin steward we probably the best we've come across.

how did you find P & O compares now to when Aurora first sailed? we also had cruised in her maiden season and also Oriana's but have just come back to cruising again and wondered about whether prices, like drinks on board, had gone up a lot. When we went before we found it all to be very reasonable almost dutyfee prices compared to home. recently we have been on Cunard and NCL who price in dollars so had a very good exchange rate. Costs soon mount up when you have drinks before dinner and a bottle of wine etc.

We were on the same cruise and although I agree that the ship is fabulous - the best in the fleet, we found the entertainment absolutely the worst we have ever encountered on a P @ O Cruise. We had to send our food back in the Cafe Bordeaux because it was very overcooked. The Theatre Company were unusually elderly and lacking in co-ordination and not one of them had a decent voice. We also found the other bands very mediocre and the comedian dire. Given that some of the best shows we have ever seen have been on board ships, this was a big disappointment. Overall I feel that Carnival have slashed the budget in so many ways that the standard of everything is gradually being diminished. At the sailaway there were no flags and then we found out that 900 new "virgin" cruisers were on board - what a shame more effort could not have been made for them. The food in the buffet was virtually the same every day and you are quite right that the dining room staff were entirely lacking in any personality at all although they all do their job admirably. We just found the whole experience very bland this time, although the Captain was a breath of fresh air and was the most interactive with the passengers that we have ever experienced.

I would like to take my children age 6 & 7 on the Aurora. What are your opinions about this? I was quite upbeat about the ship until I read your comments as I'd also like to take my mum & dad with me and they just love the entertainment. They also appreiate "chatty" interactive staff. Thanks. LAR

We've been on most of the P&O ships, and this one is my childrens favourite, we've been on it a few times and they've risen in the ranks from toddlers to teens - the kids clubs are the best! We always get a room on the 8th floor, by the library (for me), 24 hour cafe Bordeaux (for late night hot chocolate and horlicks, the the family pool area and kids clubs at the back. Book it now, you won't be disappointed.

Hello. We were on board last month with 3 generations of our family. All were well catered for and enjoyed every minute. Most children prefered spending all their time in the chidren's area than with their parents!

I would not hesitate to take them. The children have a fabulous time and the entertainment is all about pot luck because they change the theatre groups and acts all the time. The ship is beautiful and again not all the staff are non-communicative, we were just a bit unlucky, no-one is ever rude and the service is always excellent. Have a good time.

I wouldn't hesitate in doing it but make sure it's in the summer season. The kids looked to have a fab time and apart from slightly grumpy waiters everyone else was really friendly - there were lots of multi generation families on board. What I should have said on the review was that she was a lot more lively than the off season cruise we did 7 years ago. Does this help?
