canaries

Cruise Ship: Oceana Sailed: July, 2008
Destination: Canaries Age: 56-65
We sailed to the Canaries in July this year and with some reservations enjoyed the experience. This was our first trip on the Oceana & the first time we had cruised during school holidays. The ship was really crowded, and there were a lot of
children. However this only affected the pool decks and I must say that unlike the other ships that we have travelled on there was not a child free pool which would have been a plus in my book even if this was only in the mornings!

Freedom dining was a great new experience and once day one had passed and all the passengers sorted things out it went very well enabling us to eat when we wanted (usually between 8pm and 8.30 ) and meet and chat to loads of
extreemly nice and varied people - most enjoyable

All the staff met the usual P&O high standards and it goes without saying that cabins public areas etc were all cleaned to the highest standard and all the staff were extreemly courteous

The port talks were on this ship (a least the only one I went to) very poor - it seemed that only the trips were pushed and for the independant tripper the port talk did not give too much info - also the one I attended was just read from a sheet!- I assumed that it was for the benefit of those who were unable to read the sheet in the cabin guide!

Whilst I enjoyed the holiday I would not cruise again at this particular time of the year and I am not too sure about the ship - I have cruised child free - Atrimis to Iceland and Norway, and Arcadia to Northern Cities but by the same token have travelled on the Aurora and Oriana all of these I enjoyed and did not have the same problems with pool and deck areas so I can only assume that it was the time of the year.

The Cabin was OK but as it was directly under the Childrens club Room (A615) it could be quite noisy on the balcony at night - I do like to use the balcony and read or indeed just watch the sea (usually with a large bandy) after meal and shows so this was also a bit of a minus and in truth we would have been better off on the floor below.

The Casino was rather small and I did not find the casino staff as approachable as on other ships on the P& O Line, and certainly the manager was rather surley. I think that they could have done with another table or 2 but at the end of the
day enjoyed the Winners Bar, and casino along with all the other bars with the exceptionof Le Club, as this was very smokey
