Canaries delights and disappointments

Just back from our first holiday with P & O on the Ventura's 'Canaries Delight' cruise, 4 - 18 July 2008. We were surprised how much movement there was in moderate to rough seas on such a large ship. 'Freedom dining' was a joke as we had to book to ensure we had a table at the time we wanted. Restaurant food was well cooked and there was a reasonable choice. Food in self service okay but unimaginative with the same choices every day - very few speciality days reflecting the cuisine of the countries we visited. Our 'select dining' experience in East was a pleasure. Cabin facilities and service were adequate, but lacked the 'wow' factor. Except for one very helful and friendly bar steward and the internet manager, the rest of the staff we came into contact with provided an efficient service but lacked enthusiasm. Some of the entertainment spectacular, particularly the Ventura theatre groups Andrew LLoyd Webber show, classical pianist Alison Farr was very good so too comedian Kev Orkian, with the rest of the performances ranging from mediocre to poor. The organised tours we chose were all well organised and represented some of the best highlights of a generally disappointing cruise. The captain's request that passengers should not reserve the sun loungers was largely ignored so too the notice reserving the oasis pool for adults. We found some of the activities on board to our liking particularly the Tate lectures and workshops. Will we cruise again on the Ventura? - no, on another P & O ship? - probably.

Unless the captain physically comes out and removes towels from sunloungers then what can people expect the company to do? It is a personal responsbility, I have always removed towels from sunbeds and once had an agruement with a fellow passenger over it but I said that the captain (on a Thomson cruise, yes I know!)had asked people not to reserve sunbeds and that if they weren't willing to listen that was their problem and they were welcome to complain to the captain. I agree that children in adults pools needs looking at but I have seen and heard passengers complain that their child cannot swim in a particular pool.It is difficult for a company which is Britains most popular line to strike a balance because if they started to really clamp down on children in adult pools before long this site would have complaints and there would be an article in the Daily Mail with pictures of crying children.

The company should ensure their deck staff remove the towels after they have been on unoccupied 'reserved sun loungers' for an excessive amount of time - other cruise companies I've been with do it without causing offence so why can't P & O? Three pools for children should be sufficient so why should they be excused for using the only one set aside for adults?

Children in "Adults only" pools is a recurring issue on all P&O ships that I have experiencece myself, and which must be addressed by the company. I have always understood that P&O are one of the few cruise lines that do not tolerate passengers "reserving" sun loungers by placing towels on them, etc. I believe that you are perfectly within your rights to remove these towels and use the sun beds yourself if they are left unattended for a reasonable amount of time! If someone has popped to their cabin for a book or gone to get something to eat from the buffet, etc, then they should be back within half an hour or so. After that, the lounger is yours! DO IT! Happy cruising.
